Information meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30p.m. at the Fire Academy. The Academy is located at 11400 Greenstone Ave., Santa Fe Springs, CA. (This is the building next door, and directly south to Santa Fe Springs Fire Department Station 1)

The following describes the Academic Standards and Procedures for the Basic Fire Academy.

POLICY AND PROCEDURES PERTAINING TO ATTENDANCE

ADDENDUM TO ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT

To receive a certificate of completion from the Fire Academy, a cadet must satisfactorily meet the attendance requirements for FAC 118.

A cadet that misses 19 hours or more of the approved curriculum for FAC 118, The Basic Fire Academy may be asked to resign from the Basic Fire Academy.The Fire Academy Coordinator will evaluate all absences and make the final decision. This decision will be presented to the Dean of Public Safety for his approval.


GRADING AND EXAMINATION STANDARDS

1. To receive a certificate of completion from the Fire academy, a cadet must satisfactorily meet the requirements for FAC 118 and obtain satisfactory evaluations from the Drillmaster and designated instructors. Any cadet receiving five (5) Notices of Substandard Cadet Performance will receive a failing grade for the academy.

2. To pass the Firefighter portion of the academy, a cadet must achieve a cumulative average of 70% or more on all block examinations and pass all skills examinations given.

If a cadet scores below 70% on any one block examination or below 80% on the Hazardous Materials First Responder - Operational, Confined Space Awareness and Rescue Systems 1 examinations, they must pass every other portion of the course to pass the academy. The score achieved on the "substandard" test will be computed toward the cumulative average requirement. Prior to completion of the academy the cadet must pass a competency exam covering the deficient subject areas contained in the "substandard" test.

A cadet that fails a skills examination yet passes every other portion of the academy, will not receive a "Certificate of Completion" at the end of the academy or be eligible for any outstanding achievement awards. However, if the cadet returns within one year of graduation and passes the skills examination, he/she will receive a "Certificate of Completion". A cadet that fails a skills examination, must pass every other portion of the course to pass the academy.

3. To pass the Emergency Medical Technician portion of the academy, a minimum score of 80% must be achieved on all quizzes, on the CPR and final examinations, and a minimum score of 70% must be achieved on the State Certification Examination. Additionally, a passing grade must be achieved on all pass/fail skills tests given during the EMT portion of the course. A cadet that fails to pass any aspect of the EMT portion of the academy will not graduate from the Rio Hondo Fire Academy.

4. To pass the physical fitness portion of the academy, a cadet must perform satisfactorily during the morning physical fitness exercises and pass at least one of the three Physical Agility Tests given while in the academy. A cadet that fails all three of the Physical Agility Test, yet satisfactorily passes all other portions of the academy, will not receive a "Certificate of Completion" at the end of the academy or be eligible for any outstanding achievement awards. However, if the cadet returns within one year of graduation and passes the Physical Agility Test, he/she will receive a "Certificate of Completion".

A cadet that fails the physical fitness portion and any other portion of the academy, will receive a failing grade for the entire academy.


5. Grades in the academy are earned by adding the scores of all block examinations, the overall score for the EMT portion and the overall score for the physical fitness portion. Grades are assigned as follows:

90 - 100% = A
80 - 89.99% = B
70 - 79.99% = C
Below 70% = F


PHYSICAL FITNESS QUALIFICATIONS

The physical fitness portion of the Fire Academy consists of the morning physical fitness program and three Physical Agility Tests. Grades are assigned as follows:

95% A passing grade on all three (3) of the Physical Agility Tests given in the academy.

85% A passing grade on two (2) of the three (3) Physical Agility Tests given in the academy.

75% A passing grade on one (1) of the three (3) Physical Agility Tests given in the academy.

Physical Fitness Score Modification

+ 4% Modification for outstanding performance and/or attendance during physical fitness exercises.

0% Modification for average performance and/or attendance during physical fitness exercises.

- 4% Modification for below average performance and/or attendance during physical fitness exercises.

E.M.T. - 1

MINIMUM STANDARD FOR PASSING E.M.T. - 1


YOU MUST:

1. Maintain 80% on each quiz. (30% of final grade)

2. Pass the written C.P.R. exam with a minimum of 80%.

3. Pass the C.P.R. Skills Exam. (Pass / Fail Exam)
If you fail C.P.R., you fail E.M.T.

4. Pass the E.M.T. course written final exam with a minimum of 80%. (100 question final)
(30% of final grade)

5. Pass the E.M.T. Skills Proficiency Exam. (40% of final grade)

6. Pass the California State Board of Fire Services E.M.T. - 1 Certification Exam.
Minimum passing score of 70%.

IF YOU SCORE LOWER THAN 70% - YOU WILL NOT RECEIVE STATE CERTIFICATION, YOU WILL NOT BE A CERTIFIED E.M.T., AND YOU WILL NOT GRADUATE FROM THE RIO HONDO FIRE ACADEMY.

7. Do a ten (10) hour ride-a-long with a paramedic or rescue unit that handles a first-in
emergency responses. (Required by Title 22 Division 9 of the Health & Safety Code)

8. You can make-up quizzes - if absent. (excused only)

9. DO NOT CHEAT! If you do, you're out of the academy. ( no excuses)

10. Retake quizzes, if you score below 80% on a quiz, you are allowed one (1) retake of that quiz, but you must score 85% on the retake quiz. You are allowed to retake two (2) quizzes only.


FINAL GRADE IS: Quiz Average = 30% LETTER GRADE IS: 94 - 100% = A
Written Final = 30% 87 - 93.99% = B
Skills Final = 40% 80 - 86.99% = C
TOTAL 100% Below 80% = F

I understand and accept the Academic Standards and Procedures established for the Rio Hondo Fire Academy. I also certify that I am physically and medically qualified under the guidelines established by the National Fire Protection Association Pamphlet # 1582 to compete in the physical fitness portion of the academy.

Furthermore, I assume all responsibility and hold Rio Hondo College, the City of Santa Fe Springs and other participating agencies harmless for any illness or injury that may occur as the result of any physical or other aspects of training conducted while attending the Rio Hondo Fire Academy.
